Laser acne treatment

About three years ago, in 2003 to be precise, some dermatologists started experimenting with laser beam treatment for acne. This was done on patients who had failed with all other treatments. The results were encouraging. Some of the patients responded immediately after the first treatment. However, some of them complained of skin burns. However, the overall results were really encouraging news.

Before you opt to take the laser treatment for your acne condition, you should understand that there are some side effects, which are treatable and in the opinion of most dermatologists these side effects are minimal compared to oral drugs and using of external ointments and creams. Discussing potential side effects on any course of treatment is not only good medical practice, but helps to make an informed decision about the desirability of undertaking the treatment in the first place. Causing the skin to redden and become swollen are some of the known side effects of laser acne treatment. Yet, one must understand that more research is being done at present on the side effects and it’s too early to say that all is clear.

Small glands are located next to each hair follicle under the surface of the skin. These glands, known as sebaceous glands emit an oily secretion which helps to lubricate the skin as well as the hair follicle. Under the technique of laser treatment high power light beams are directed to the sebaceous glands on the skin which causes the glands to shrink and stops the production of sebum. In laser treatment, the penetration of the beam can be controlled, done at intervals and the effects can be easily monitored. Each treatment can last a few minutes or a few hours depending on the size of the surface that is affected. This treatment has been accepted by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States of America and has been found to be successful on most patients.

Laser treatment can also be used to remove the scars left on your skin after an acne attack. By this treatment, the uppermost layer of your skin is peeled off, allowing new unscarred skin to grow in its place.

One of the forbidding factors of laser acne treatment is the cost of treatment. However, as in the case of all other ailments, it is necessary to seek competent medical advice before embarking on the treatment.
